At Lander University, the Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education with a concentration in Mathematics prepares students to become highly qualified high school mathematics teachers who inspire confidence, curiosity and problem-solving skills in the next generation of learners. Combining rigorous mathematics coursework with hands-on teaching experiences, the program equips future educators with the knowledge, skills and professional preparation needed to succeed in today's classrooms.
Housed within Lander's College of Education, the program emphasizes both deep mathematical understanding and effective teaching practices. Students learn how to make complex mathematical concepts accessible, engaging and relevant for diverse learners while developing the instructional expertise needed to foster academic success in grades 9–12. Through observations, guided practice and in-the-moment mentoring, candidates build confidence and professional expertise in authentic school settings. Students complete more than 100 hours of field experiences before their culminating student teaching semester.
Upon completing their degree and all South Carolina Department of Education requirements, graduates receive their recommendation for a South Carolina teacher certification in Mathematics (Grades 9–12). The program has received national recognition from the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) and the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP).
