Lander University’s Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education with a concentration in chemistry prepares future educators to bring the excitement of scientific discovery into the classroom. Combining a strong foundation in chemistry with innovative teaching methods and extensive classroom experiences, the program equips graduates to become highly effective high school chemistry teachers who inspire the next generation of scientists, healthcare professionals, engineers and innovators.
Housed within Lander’s College of Education, the program integrates advanced chemistry content with research-based instructional practices, helping students develop the knowledge, confidence and leadership skills needed to thrive in today’s secondary schools. By emphasizing both scientific expertise and effective teaching, Lander prepares graduates to make chemistry meaningful, engaging and accessible for all learners. Through observations, guided practice and in-the-moment mentoring, candidates build confidence and professional expertise in authentic school settings. Students complete more than 100 hours of field experiences before their culminating student teaching semester.
Upon completing their degree and all South Carolina Department of Education requirements, graduates receive their recommendation for a South Carolina teacher certification in Chemistry (Grades 9–12). The program has received national recognition from the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP).
