Lander University students were recently honored for their academic accomplishments by the College of Arts and Humanities.

Department of Art + Design

Dr. Fathima Nazim-Starnes, chair of the Department of Art + Design, presented awards during the Uptown ArtWalk at the Greenwood Arts Center on the evening of Thursday, April 13.

  • Art + Design Discipline Award: Kephira Davis, of Greer.
    This award is presented to the most outstanding major in art who exhibits high academic achievement, leadership, and promise in the field of art education, graphic design, art history, or studio.
  • Art Education Award: Jessica Duran, of Greenwood.
    The award is given to a student who exhibits a passion for teaching, and exceptional growth and skill in teacher education.
  • Art History Award: Kennedy Henjes, of Roebuck.
    This award is given to a student who has made the study of art history a part of their own artistic practice.
  • Ceramics Award: Kristina Peay, of Lexington.
    The Ceramics Award is given by to a student who demonstrates exceptional growth and skill in ceramics.
  • Foundations in Art Award:  Olivia Estes, of Clinton.
    The Foundations in Art Award is given to a first-year art major who demonstrates growth, ambition, positivity, critical thinking, and problem solving.
  • Graphic Design Award:  Kyle Bryant, of Easley.
    The Graphic Design Award is given to a student who demonstrates exceptional growth and skill in graphic design.
  • Leadership in Art Award: Georgia Watts, of Batesburg.
    The Leadership in Art Award is presented to a student who demonstrates exceptional leadership qualities and integrity in and out of class.
  • Painting Award: Anastasia Muzzarelli, of Mauldin.
    The Painting Award is given to a student who demonstrates exceptional growth and skill in painting.
  • Photography Award:  Kristina Peay, of Lexington.
    The Photography Award is given to a student who demonstrates exceptional growth and skill in photography.
  • Sculpture Award: Kennedy Henjes, of Roebuck.
    The Sculpture Award is given to a student who demonstrates exceptional growth and skill in sculpture.
  • Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) Award:  Drayton Rowe, of Saluda.
  • Master of Fine Arts (MFA) Award:  Emily Mathis, of Bishopville.

Department of English & Foreign Languages

Dr. Jeffrey Baggett, chair of the Department of English and Foreign Languages, presented the following awards during a ceremony on April 12.

  • Margaret M. Bryant Humanities Award: Carolyn Carpenter, of Aiken.
    This award recognizes a senior majoring in a humanities discipline who plans to enroll in graduate school and will best represent Lander University. 
  • Spanish Discipline Award: Allyson Jackson, of Greenville.
    This honor is presented to a student who exemplifies outstanding scholarship in Spanish courses at Lander University.
  • Dessie Dean Pitts Humanities Award: Kamryn J. Jenkins, of Columbia, for “My Ancestral Home.”
    This award is named in honor of Lander alumna Dessie Dean Pitts, and given to the student who writes the best nonfiction essay published in “New Voices: Lander University’s Student Journal.”
  • English Discipline Award:  Hannah Cooper, of Beech Island; and E. Brantley Murphy, of Taylors.
    This award is granted for outstanding scholarship exhibited in English courses at Lander University.
  • Creative Writing Award:  Hannah Cooper, of Beech Island, for “Salty Foam.”
    This honor is given to the student who writes the best work of creative writing published in New Voices: Lander University’s Student Journal.
  • French Discipline Award: Houston Moore, of Little Mountain.
    This award is given to an outstanding French student who demonstrates dedication to the discipline.
  • Alliance Francaise Medal:  Autumn McDonald, of Anderson.
    This award recognizes a French student who demonstrates the highest scholastic achievement in French language and literature.
  • New Voices Art and Design Award:  Sierra Thoreson, of Woodruff, for “Leaves on a Koi Pond.”
    This honor is given by the humanities faculty and student editors of “New Voices,” with the selected artwork to be featured on the cover of the student journal.

Department of Media and Communication

Dr. Misty Jameson, interim chair of the Department of Media and Communication, presented the awards during a ceremony held the evening of Wednesday, April 19.

  • Forum Award: Harrison Howell, of Chesnee.
    This award is presented to a student on “The Forum” student newspaper staff who demonstrates leadership, professionalism, and excellence in journalism.
  • Media and Communication Award: Hayden Joyner, of Rock Hill.
    This honor is given to the most outstanding senior majoring in media and communication as evidenced by high academic achievement, leadership, and promise in the field of media and communication.
  • Speech and Performance Award: Catherine Jordan, of Prosperity.
    This award is given to a student in the media and communication program who has shown outstanding creative initiative in the areas of speech and or performance.
  • XLR Award: Hakeem Brown, of Greenville; and Hayden Joyner, of Rock Hill.
    This honor is presented to students who demonstrate outstanding performances with audio in (and outside of) the XLR studio. The students exemplify XLR standards, as evidenced by character traits, audio techniques, and projects.

 

Department of Music

Dr. Reed Gallo, interim chair of the Department of Music, presented awards during a concert performance held in the Abney Cultural Center Auditorium on April 11.

  • Music Discipline Award: Katie Walenceus, of Greenwood.
    This award is presented to the most outstanding junior or senior music major in recognition of high academic achievement, quality contributions to the music program, artistry and commitment to the discipline.
  • Turner Music Medal: Abigail Johnson, of Greenwood.
    This honor is bestowed upon a senior majoring in music who has maintained a high scholastic standing and has demonstrated the potential for making an outstanding contribution to the field of music education, performance or music-related work. The medal was established by Gladys Winchester Turner, class of 1954.
