MS Windows Vulnerability and Reminder of Fraudulent Emails

On Monday, May 30, 2022, Microsoft issued CVE-2022-30190 regarding the Microsoft Support Diagnostic Tool (MSDT) in Windows vulnerability (dubbed “Follina” by a security researcher). The vulnerability affects all versions of Windows and Windows systems. Microsoft is working on a comprehensive patch to the vulnerability.

This vulnerability allows exploiters to attempt to take over a computer and access files when a malicious link is clicked or a malicious attachment is opened. To counteract this and other vulnerabilities, follow the best practices and recommendations below:

  • Be aware that attackers will try to exploit this vulnerability through phishing campaigns
    • Don’t click on suspicious links and avoid opening email attachments unless you trust the person who sent them and you were expecting them
  • Keep your devices, software, and applications up-to-date
    • Update Windows on your personal computer each month after Patch Tuesday updates have been released (that’s the 2nd Tuesday of every month)
    • Enable automatic updates
  • Use an anti-virus software and keep it updated
    • Windows defender is adequate for Windows machines and comes pre-installed. For other OSes, antiviruses like Bitdefender or Avira are also known to be effective
  • Sign up for and opt-in to 2FA/MFA for accounts that have it available
  • Only use trusted networks protected with an appropriately complex password

Multi Factor Authentication

Cyberattacks, including ransomware, continue to increase against organizations worldwide. Multi Factor Authentication (MFA) is an additional level of authentication that reduces the risk of technology and data compromises by making cyberattacks more difficult. MFA is currently available to all faculty, staff, and students. While many employees already utilize MFA at Lander, all Lander employees will be required to have MFA enabled by the end of 2022. This direction is in alignment with the State security policies and industry best standards.

For the next several weeks and months, the ITS team will work with individuals and departments to facilitate the enablement of MFA on employee email accounts. Individuals can request the enablement of MFA via the new Service Desk portal:

MFA can help:

  • Deter unauthorized access to email and other MFA enabled accounts.
  • Reduce incidents whereby online criminals use stolen credentials to launch cyberattacks and steal confidential information and/or potentially money from individuals.
  • Enhance the protection for university computing systems and sensitive data.
