Art, Music, Language: Here’s What’s Happening at Lander the Week of Jan. 26

An art exhibit, a launch party and two concerts are on the horizon beginning Monday, Jan. 26, for the Greenwood community. These events and activities, all of which are free and open to the public, thanks to the hard work of the students, faculty and staff of Lander University.

On Monday, Jan. 26, the Department of Art at Lander will open its annual Juried Art Exhibit in the new Lander Art Gallery, located in the Jackson Library. The exhibit will remain on display through Feb. 17, with a reception planned for Feb. 5 at 5 p.m. in the gallery.

Then, on Tuesday, Jan. 27, the Department of Music will hold its annual Honors Recital, featuring several of the department’s top students. The concert begins at 7 p.m. in the Abney Cultural Center Auditorium.

On Wednesday, Jan. 28, the public is invited to join the Department of Communication and Languages for the launch party of the University’s annual student journal, New Voices, in the Barksdale Recital Hall, located in the Cultural Center. The event will begin at 6 p.m. Featuring student-submitted poetry, prose and artwork, New Voices is produced by a team of students who staff the journal for course credit. Students whose work is featured in this year’s edition of New Voices will be invited to share their work with those attending the launch party.

And finally, on Thursday, Jan. 29, Dr. Richard Thomas and Andrew Sheffield will give a faculty recital, titled “Hidden Gems for Cello and Piano.” The concert begins at 7 p.m. in the Abney Cultural Center Auditorium, and selections will include Hélène Liebmann’s “Sonata in B-flat,” Heitor Villa-Lobos’s “Pequena Suite,” and Francesco Cilèa’s “Sonata in D.”
