Lander Students Get Lesson in Self-Defense

Private investigator Chandra Cleveland, a law enforcement veteran and self-defense expert, demonstrates how to use a "catfight self-defense tool" to ward off an attack by an assailant. "This is going to be a big surprise for him," she said, adding, "as soon as he lets my hand go, I'm gone." Cleveland, who spoke at Lander University, said that one in four female undergraduates will be sexually assaulted by the time she graduates. "If you don't know how to protect yourself, you're more likely to be a victim," she said. Cleveland, whose visit was sponsored by Lander's Spill the T.E.A. student organization, said that awareness of one's surroundings is the key to staying safe.
