Junior and senior students at Ware Shoals High School of Greenwood School District 51 will experience life as a college student thanks to a Dual Enrollment partnership between the district and Lander University.
While Lander helps Dual Enrollment students by providing significant financial assistance for tuition costs, Ware Shoals High and District 51 are providing increased financial incentives, as well as shuttle transportation to and from the Lander campus.
The program, which is open to high school and home school students, empowers participants to earn college credit while still in high school. They can complete their courses either in person while in a Lander classroom, online or through a hybrid combination of both forms.
After taking part in orientation on Tuesday, May 28, or Monday, May 29, all Dual Enrollment students will begin taking college courses with the rest of the Lander student body on Monday, August 19.
"We consider our Dual Enrollment participants to be Lander students, so they all enjoy the same rights and privileges associated with that status," said Shelby Dominick Reed, director of Lander's Special Cohort Outreach & Bridge Programs. "They have access to free tutoring in our Academic Success Center, as well as our Fitness Center and swimming pool. They can even enjoy our athletic events by using their Lander student identification. We anticipate our Dual Enrollment students will be actively engaged on campus both inside and outside of the Lander classroom."
Savannah Campbell, school counselor for Ware Shoals High School, sees the taste of college life as a tremendous advantage for participating Dual Enrollment students. "This partnership with Lander is such a phenomenal opportunity for high school students, and I am taken aback by the level of support Lander has provided," she said. "Among the primary benefits for our students is the exposure to the rigor they will see once they begin college (in earnest) after their high school graduation."
