Lander Observance Jan. 14 Will Honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

gerald wittLander University will hold a special program celebrating the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on Thursday, Jan. 14, at 8 a.m. in the Josephine B. Abney Cultural Center Auditorium. The event is sponsored by Lander's Division of Student Affairs and is free and open to the public.

The program will feature guest speaker Gerald Witt, assistant superintendent for administration in Greenwood County School District 50. He said his remarks will be a tribute to Dr. King and King's accomplishments as a civil rights leader. Witt was one of the first Black players on the Greenwood High School football team when he was a sophomore during a time when racial tensions were high in the nation.

Witt holds undergraduate and master's degrees from the University of South Carolina. He is on the Board of Trustees of The Lander Foundation; a member of the board of Self Regional Healthcare; and a past board member of the Greenwood United Way. He is also on the Board of Deacons of Mount Moriah Baptist Church, in Greenwood.

The special memorial program will also feature a performance by the Martin Luther King Community Choir.
