Lander Student Receives Prestigious International Scholarship

bre-butler-TN.jpgLander University sophomore Breanna Butler, of Bradley, has been chosen to receive a Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship for the spring semester.

Chosen from a pool of more than 2,700 applicants, Butler is one of only ten South Carolina college students to receive the award for the spring and only the second Lander student ever selected.

An Honors College student majoring in secondary English education, she will spend the spring semester studying at the University of Winchester, in Winchester, England.

While there, she expects to do a good deal of traveling. "I would like to go to Paris, Bourges, Switzerland, all over England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland," she said.

After graduating from Lander, Butler will work as a high school English teacher in South Carolina, but her long-term goal is to teach in a third-world country.

She described her emotions when she learned she had won a Gilman Scholarship as "really thankful and really glad."

Dr. Lillian Craton, associate professor of English and director of Lander's Honors College, said she is "incredibly proud" of Butler, whom she described as one of Lander's "best and brightest" students.

"I cannot wait to cheer on Bre during her adventures in the U.K. next semester," she said.
