Works by Italian composer Luigi Boccherini, German composer Johannes Brahms, Argentine composer Astor Piazzola and Bohemian composer David Popper will be featured in a Sunday, Oct. 7, performance by cellist Dr. Richard Thomas.
The recital by Thomas, an assistant professor of music at Presbyterian College and adjunct instructor of cello at Lander University, will begin at 8 p.m. in Lander's Barksdale Recital Hall, room 250 of the Josephine B. Abney Cultural Center.
Thomas, who directs the Presbyterian College Chamber Orchestra, has been a member of the South Carolina Philharmonic, the Augusta Symphony, the East Texas Symphony and the Dallas Lyric Opera Orchestra. Most recently, he was principal cellist of the Wilmington Symphony in North Carolina.
He will be accompanied on piano by Dr. Jun Matsuo, an assistant professor of music at Coker College, with whom he has performed on numerous occasions in the past. In 2010, the two gave a series of recitals in Japan, including performances at the University of Tokyo, Kyoto University and Tohoku Fukushi University in Sendai.
The recital by Thomas, which will include selections from Boccherini's "Sonata No. 6 in A Major" and Brahms' "Sonata No. 1 in E Minor, Op. 38;" Piazzola's "Le Grand Tango;" and Popper's "Tarantella, Op. 33," is free and open to the public. Because seating is limited, however, audience members are encouraged to arrive early.
