Shelby Lynn Dominick and Trent Kline joined the Lander University staff recently and they both view their positions as presenting opportunities to make students more aware of the many activities they supervise on campus and persuade them to become involved.
Dominick is Lander's new director of student activities. She is a Greenwood native and a graduate of Greenwood High School. After graduating from The College of Charleston in 1999 with a degree in elementary education and early childhood education, she worked as a kindergarten teacher at Springfield Elementary School in Greenwood. She said, "Teaching was my dream job."
After three years as a classroom teacher, she decided to seek a graduate degree in student activities and, in 2004, she earned a master's in college student affairs administration from the University of Georgia.
Before joining the Lander staff, she was a career development specialist at Oglethorpe University in Atlanta and later held positions as director of dual enrollment, academic advisement coordinator and enrollment adviser at Piedmont Technical College in Greenwood.
At Lander, her duties include collaborating with the University Program Council, the student organization that schedules a variety of social events on campus; organizing student orientation and parents' weekend activities; and student leadership. Lander's Greek life organizations are also under her supervision.
Trent Kline, Lander's new director of campus recreation and intramurals, grew up on a farm in Ohio and received his bachelor's and master's degrees in education at Ohio State University. As an undergraduate, he majored in sport and leisure studies with an emphasis in leadership and humanities. His major as a graduate student was sport management.
While at Ohio State, Kline worked in the Department of Recreational Sports as a competitive sports graduate administrative associate, facility operations assistant and coordinator of the university's Jesse Owens Recreational Center. He has a broad range of experience in event management, supervising aspects of the Ohio Special Olympics summer games and various athletic tournaments.
Before accepting his new position at Lander, he worked part time as the evening supervisor at the Jeff May Complex, Lander's new recreation, wellness and sports facility.
About his new position, Kline said, "The opportunities open to me are to make students aware of Lander's recreation and intramural programs, which are offered at no cost." He added that he is open to suggestions for new programs.
Kline and his wife, Leanne, moved to Greenwood in June of 2011 so she could begin her medical residency at Self Regional Healthcare. The couple has a daughter, Harper, who is approaching her first birthday.
Shelby Dominick is engaged to marry Jason Reed, and their wedding is scheduled for July 28.
Randy Bouknight, vice president for Student Affairs, said with Dominick and Kline on staff, the university has an opportunity to make strides in student activities campus-wide. "They are two very talented people with good experience for our students and all of us."
