Lander Students Get Ready to Pack Their Bags for Study Abroad

Eleven names will be added to the growing list of Lander University students who are accepted into the university's Study Abroad program. Dr. DeWitt Stone Jr., director of the program, said more than 100 Lander students have enrolled in a college or university abroad for a semester or a summer study term since he became director in 2005.

In addition to those who have completed Study Abroad, another 210 Lander students have participated in 25 short-term study tours at international schools led by 30 Lander faculty members. Four study tour groups composed of 21 students visited Amsterdam, Honduras, China and Korea this summer.

This fall, five students will spend a semester at the University of Winchester in England. They are: Grace Halsey, of Hodges, history; Haley Jones, of Inman, psychology; Charles Roesner, of Saluda, English; Heather Schryver, of Anderson, and Caitlan Wyatt, of Greenville, both majoring in education.

Two students majoring in visual arts will study at the University of Georgia arts program in Cortona, Italy: Alexandria Cox, of Greenwood; and Josie Hayes, of Chapin.

Sheena Green, of Charleston, a Spanish major, studied at the University of Managua in Nicaragua last fall. This fall she will perform an internship as a teacher's assistant in a Montessori school operated by a charity in Nagarote, Nicaragua.

Business major Joseph Sagara, of Simpsonville, will be the first Lander student to study abroad for a full academic year. He is taking an intensive Japanese language class at Clemson University this summer in preparation for his study at Kwansei Gakuin University in Osaka, Japan.

Courtney Priester, a political science major from Saluda, will study at the University of Incheon in Korea, and Spanish major Jennifer Tran, of Greenwood, will spend the fall semester at Alicante Language Institute in Alicante, Spain.

Stone said that Cox, Green, Halsey, Sagara and Wyatt are in Lander's Honors International Program.
