Lander Participates in Annual S.C. Historical Association Meeting

Lander University was well represented when the South Carolina Historical Association held its annual meeting in March at the Department of Archives and History in Columbia. Four students, five current and retired faculty members and a Lander graduate attended, and some had leading roles in the meeting.

The four students who attended were Donna Knight of Greenwood, Courtney Kesler of Ninety Six, Elnora Adams of Edgefield and Erin Katz of Columbia. All four are history majors and members of Phi Alpha Theta, Lander's chapter of the national History Honor Society.

Assistant history professor Kevin Witherspoon organized the conference and presented a paper titled, "Hard Foul: The U.S./Soviet Basketball Rivalry, 1965-1975."

Witherspoon was also elected president of the Historical Association for the coming year.

William Ramsey, associate professor and chair of Lander's History Department, was the keynote speaker at the event's luncheon and his presentation focused on the early history of South Carolina.

Professor Robert Figueira co-edited "Proceedings of the South Carolina Historical Association" for the eighth time.
