In Lander’s pre-law program, student’s do more than take a list of approved courses. Through the Curtis G. Shaw Pre-Law Society, pre-law students receive an immersive experience that includes networking and professional development opportunities, and special events featuring accomplished legal scholars, prominent attorneys and distinguished judges from state and federal courts.

In addition to the society’s activities and programming, Lander University will continue to offer internships for pre-law students. Attorneys in law firms and judges in courts as well as the Eighth Circuit’s Solicitor’s Office and Public Defender’s Office have offered internships to mentor students for many years.
Lander alumni have a strong record of acceptance in law schools throughout the country. The largest number of alumni have studied at the Rice School of Law at the University of South Carolina. However, alumni are also law graduates well known schools of law, including
Lander alumni work as attorneys in private firms, for businesses and corporations, as solicitors and public defenders and in government service at the local, state and national levels. They are licensed to practice in South Carolina and in other states.
About Judge Curtis G. Shaw
This Society is named after the late Judge Curtis G. Shaw (1933-2015), a native of Greenwood, veteran of the U.S. Army and an attorney who served as a city court judge, probate judge and master in equity for South Carolina’s Eighth Judicial Circuit. Shaw was elected as Chief Judge of the S.C. Family Court for the Eighth Judicial Circuit and subsequently elected to the first S.C. Court of Appeals as senior judge. He served with distinction on the S.C. Judicial Merit Commission and received the Order of the Palmetto, the state’s highest civilian honor. Judge Shaw’s son-in-law, S.C. Rep. John R. McCravy III serves as a founder of the society.
