One of the core values of Lander University’s College of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences is mentorship. Lander students are broadly educated, are equipped with the knowledge and skills needed for their future careers, and receive personalized instruction from dedicated faculty who work carefully with each student to prepare them for the real world.

This high level of mentorship and professional development was on display earlier this semester as two English majors presented undergraduate research at the College English Association’s national conference, held March 26-28 in Charlotte, North Carolina. Kylie Latham, of Greenwood, presented her paper titled “Repression or Expression? Emotional Restraint in Ang Lee’s Sense and Sensibility.

Meanwhile, Alyssa Campbell, of North Augusta, presented her paper titled “The Effects of the Mislabeling of Satire Using #satire.”

Both students were mentored by Lander’s English faculty, and specifically Dr. Mark Rollins, professor of English and assistant provost for academic affairs at Lander; and Dr. Sean Barnette, professor of English and assistant director of Lander’s Honors College. Rollins teaches courses in 19th and 20th century British literature, including a course on satire. He noted that the presentations by these two students were especially significant, since the College English Association’s national conference generally does not accept papers from the undergraduate level.

“Mentorship is highly valued in the College of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences,” said Rollins. “It is an easy task when working with students as self-disciplined and full of initiative as Kylie and Alyssa. Seeing them develop their research and successfully navigate a professional conference proves that when we invest deeply in our students' interests, they are capable of exceeding the highest professional standards.”
