The community is invited to join the Department of Art for a reception and conversation with visiting artist Kelley Pettibone on Thursday, March 12, at 5 p.m. in the Lander Art Gallery, located inside the Jackson Library at Lander University. The exhibit, titled “Peace by Pieces,” is on display now through March 24. The reception and visits to the gallery are free and open to the public, and the gallery is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday.
This exhibit will feature a collection primarily focused on grief, loss and healing. Pettibone showcases her “decade of grief” through visual imagery and highlights the healing power of creativity. The works will feature a sense of nostalgia, as she uses art to redefine ‘home’ after devastating loss. Pettibone believes, “As a creative, we have a unique gift; we have a natural outlet of self-expression that affords us the opportunity to visually create that which lacks verbal definition.”
Pettibone is a fine artist and collegiate educator living in Columbia, South Carolina. Her practice includes woodcut relief, linoleum relief, intaglio, collagraphy, lithography, mixed media collage, painting, papermaking, pyrography and assemblage. In addition to being a fine artist, Pettibone is an instructor at the School of Visual Art and Design at the University of South Carolina, where she teaches printmaking and drawing studio art classes. She has been exhibiting works in galleries since 2018.
