Lander University’s faculty members don’t just teach classes. They often work and serve in their field.
One such faculty member is Dr. Mandy Cleveland, professor of psychology and chair of the Department of Psychological Science and Human Services, who has served the state of South Carolina on the Board of Psychology Examiners—housed by S.C. Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation—since 2023.
Cleveland said the board has a mix of clinical psychologists, counseling psychologists and school psychologists. The role of the board, she said, is to protect the public.
Lander students gain unique insight by learning from faculty members who are still practicing in their field.
“As a member of the S.C. Board of Examiners in Psychology, I have had the opportunity to attend the Association for State and Provincial Licensing Boards (ASPPB) annual and midyear meetings,” Cleveland said.
“ASPPB makes decisions that impact licensure for psychologists across the United States and Canada. It is attended by psychologist board members, board attorneys and board administrators from across the United States and Canada. Currently ASPPB is contributing to a revision of the licensing exam (the Examination for Professional Practice in Psychology, commonly referred to as the EPPP). Psychologists must pass this exam in order to practice independently in the United States and Canada.”
Cleveland said while every state and province across the U.S. and Canada uses the EPPP as its licensing exam, learning about the ways the licensing process differs state to state at these meetings is very interesting.
