Lander University alumni and members of the greater Greenwood community are invited to join Dr. Daniel Harrison, professor of sociology, and Dr. Carlos Mentley, professor of Spanish, on a trip that will explore three cultures of Medieval Spain. Taking place May 10 through May 21, 2026, the trip will tour the community of Andalusia, and will include stops in Madrid, Cordoba, Ronda and Granada.
“Andalusia remains a hidden treasure for visitors to Spain,” Harrison said. “Off the beaten track, in many respects Andalusia represents what Spain used to be, as opposed to what it is. The places at the core of our trip - Cordoba, Ronda, and Granada - are filled with magic, mystery and history. If you are interested in religion, music, food and language, this study tour is for you.”
About the Trip
On this 12-day trip, participants will enjoy the rich and thriving culture of Southern Spain. In this region where medieval Muslims, Jews, and Christians lived and worked side by side, travelers will experience firsthand the architectural, musical, historical and culinary legacy of the region by visiting Roman ruins, Jewish synagogues and Moorish palaces. Travelers will also experience flamenco at a traditional tablao, try some of the best cuisine Spain has to offer on classic tapas crawls and visit world-class museums. As expert guides, Mentley and Harrison will help participants savor the local atmosphere of Southern Spain.
How to Join
The total cost of the trip, which includes airfare and lodging, is $3,700. Payments can be made in smaller increments or all at once. Applications are being accepted now through Dec. 1, with an initial deposit due Dec. 15. “What a rare treat it is to travel in the company of such passionate and skilled experts as Dr. Mentley and Dr. Harrison,” said Prof. Lauren Corbitt, lecturer of Spanish and director of Lander’s Office of Study Abroad. “Dr. Mentley has been traveling to Spain his entire career, and knows how to live like a local. There is no one I would trust more to guide me to exquisite food, splendid sights and memorable experiences in southern Spain. Dr. Harrison also has experience traveling to Spain, and is well-versed in the country's rich history. You're in great hands with these two.”
