A homecoming king and queen contest, talent show, medallion search, soapbox car race and bonfire with live music will be among the activities that Lander University students can take part in during homecoming week, Feb. 6-11.
Other homecoming events are also open to the public, such as the kick-off celebration for Lander's annual Habitat for Humanity project, which begins at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 8, with construction of this year's house beginning that afternoon.
The public can also take part in this year's Habitat for Humanity 5K Race, which starts at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 11. Online registration for the race will begin soon.
A golf outing on Friday, Feb. 10, at Greenwood Country Club is the first of several events planned for the weekend for Lander alumni. Those interested in participating should contact Assistant Director of Alumni Affairs Debbie Dill at 864-388-8351. The cost is $65 per golfer, which includes a buffet lunch, Lander goodie bag and other gifts.
From 7-9 p.m. that Friday, there will be an alumni social, sponsored by Lorraine Angelino '05, at the Lander Foundation and Alumni Center. Heavy appetizers will be served and adult beverages available. The cost is $8 per person.
This year's alumni tailgating will take place in Room 221 (Redderson Room) of the Physical Education and Exercise Science (PEES) Center, from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 11. For $8, alumni can enjoy a cookout-style meal before heading over to the basketball games against USC-Aiken. A cash bar will also be available.
Lander Director of Alumni Affairs Myra Greene encouraged Lander graduates to take advantage of what promises to be a fun week.
"The Homecoming theme this year is 'Return to the Emerald City,' and we are hoping our alumni will come back to experience what is still the small-town feel of our Emerald City, while seeing all the many changes on campus," she said.
Greene noted that there will be reunions at numerous restaurants in town, in addition to the scheduled events. She invited alumni to "return to your roots - in the Emerald City!"
