"Freedom and Empowerment" is the theme of the Lander University Dance Company's performance on Monday, April 20, in the Josephine B. Abney Cultural Center Auditorium, beginning at 8 p.m. The event is open to the public free of charge, although donations will be accepted.
Dr. Hannah Park, assistant professor of dance, said the student dancers have been crafting and investigating dance movements and discovering new ways to articulate, express, and feel empowered as individuals and as members of the dance community.
Park said the concert will include contemporary dance and jazz and will explore global dance, tap and hip-hop. Part of the program was arranged with Lander's Jazz Ensemble directed by Dr. Rob Gardiner, associate professor of music.
There will also be a pop-culture dance by Lander international students and Park will also be featured in a solo performance.
Park said most of the students in this semester's Dance Company are graduating dance minors, many of whom are majoring in other subjects, including education, kinesiology, nursing, health management and social work.
The dancers will also perform at Wesley Commons in Greenwood on Friday, April 17, as part of their community outreach commitment.
