Ball in the House Coming to Greenwood

Ball in the HouseGreenwood Lander Performing Arts' 66th season continues at 7:30 p.m., Monday, Nov. 19, at the Josephine B. Abney Cultural Center Auditorium, with a performance by a cappella group Ball in the House.

The five-member vocal group, who sing everything from classic rhythm and blues to pop, hip-hop and gospel, have won numerous Billboard, MTV and VH1 awards. They have appeared on America's Got Talent and the Today Show, as well as National Public Radio, and have performed with such artists as The Beach Boys, Gladys Knight, The Jonas Brothers, Jessica Simpson, Fantasia, Blondie, The Temptations, Smokey Robinson, KC & the Sunshine Band and Kool & the Gang.

The Boston-based group, which features tenor Dave Guisti, baritone Nels Urtel, tenor Suranjan Sen, vocal bass Ryan Chappelle and beatboxer Jon J. Ryan, released their fifth album, "One Night Only," last year.

According to The Boston Globe, "Ball in the House has everything you would expect to find in a successful pop/rock band. The one thing it doesn't have is instruments."

Tickets for the performance, partially funded by the S.C. Arts Commission, the National Endowment for the Arts and Lander University, are $20 for adults and $15 for children. Tickets may be purchased by calling the GLPA office at 864-388-8326, or by mailing in the order form available at greenwoodlanderperformingarts.com.

During their visit to Greenwood, Ball in the House will entertain area youth with two Outreach Program performances, sponsored by Barbara and Jack Parham, and by the Self Family Foundation. Group members will also teach a master class to students from Brewer Middle School, who will join the group onstage during the evening performance.

Although she has never seen Ball in the House in person, GLPA executive director Cecily Ferguson said that her daughter, Juliana, saw the group at the Peace Center in Greenville, and "couldn't stop talking about the performance and how wonderful they were. She was just really impressed with the variety of what they can do."

Ferguson called the visit by Ball in the House "a great lead-in to the holiday season," adding, "it's a family show that everyone can enjoy together."
