Lander University Students Honored for Academic Excellence, Extracurricular Service

Lander University recently honored its cocurricular standouts for the 2009-10 academic year, presenting student life awards to the university's top students and student organizations. The awards were announced during Lander's annual Academic and Student Life Awards Ceremony.

Lander president Dr. Daniel Ball presented senior business administration major Cameron Dorn with the prestigious President's Award, given annually in recognition of unique exemplification of the ethic of service to the university community. Dorn, a resident of Waterloo, is a member of the Blue Key National Honor Society, Lander's Study Abroad Advisory Panel and the university's Student Alumni Association.

A two-time All-American triathlete, Dorn is the 2009 Division II Collegiate Champion in the sport and winner of over 20 triathlons and running races. Dorn serves as an athlete and coach for the internationally recognized endurance team, KATTOUF. He has been an ambassador for the United States while competing in an elite triathlon in South America. Dorn is also the coaching director of the Greenwood Endurance Team. A volunteer with Meals on Wheels, the American Cancer Society and various youth triathlons, Dorn has also visited area schools and churches to discuss his athletic, academic and study abroad activities.

Special education major Wesley Owings of Mountville and exercise science major Emily Burch of Greenwood were named Lander University Man and Woman of the Year.

A Presidential Ambassador, Owings is a founding member and president of the Palmetto State Teachers Association and a teaching fellow. Among the many organizations he is involved with, Owings is a member of Lander's Student Government Association, Student Life Council and President's Council.

Burch has held leadership roles with Phi Mu Fraternity and the Lander Dance Company. She is a member of the Blue Key Honor Society and Lander's Physical Education and Exercise Studies Club. Burch has also served on Lander's Homecoming Committee, and she has been a member of the Academic Honor Council.

Lander's Greek Man and Woman of the Year awards went to exercise science major Wade Boring of Greenwood and nursing major Morgan Layne of Ninety Six. Boring is a member of the American College of Sports Medicine and Lander's Inter-Fraternity Council. He is vice president of Kappa Sigma Fraternity.

Layne has held leadership positions with Phi Mu Fraternity and she has volunteered with the South Carolina Medical Reserve Corps, the Good Shepherd Free Health Clinic and the Greenwood Soup Kitchen. She is a member of Sigma Theta Tau Nursing National Honor Society, the Lander University Student Nurses' Association, the Blue Key Honor Society and Lander Student Alumni Association.
