“The Siege of Savage’s Old Fields: Remembering the American Revolutionary Battle for its 250th Anniversary”
Presenter: Franklin Rausch
Reception: 5:30 p.m.
Presentation: 6:00 p.m.
During the American War for Independence, the fighting in South Carolina was known for being particularly brutal. But in the first battle there, which took place between November 19 and November 22 in 1775 near present-day Ninety Six, only a handful of people were killed despite several thousand combatants fighting for several days. In this presentation, Dr. Rausch will discuss what led to the battle, what the clash was like, and why it caused relatively so few casualties. In addition, he will examine its historical importance as part of the American Revolution and War for Independence.
Dr. Franklin Rausch is a professor of history at Lander University. He earned his M.A. in Asian studies at Indiana University and his Ph.D. from the University of British Columbia in Vancouver Canada. He volunteers as a living historian, usually at Ninety Six, where he serves on the cannon crew and uses dioramas to help people better understand the history of the American Revolution.
