Dr. Osvaldo Parrilla, left, Spanish professor at Lander University and advisor for the Hispanic student organization SOMOS LU, recently presented a $1000 check to Randy Bouknight, middle, special gifts officer for the University.
Lander students Ashley Vargas-Luna (holding the check) and Alan Corona, right, represented SOMOS LU, during the presentation. The organization intends to establish an annual scholarship, to be awarded every fall semester to an incoming first-generation freshman student, with a preference for Hispanic students.
Parrilla said SOMOS LU began in 2016 to promote Latinx culture on campus. His group has organized fundraisers, including a successful Gala, to finance the scholarship.
