It’s Okay to Not Know What You Want to Do: A Humanities Degree Might Be Right for You

Music-Jazz-William-F23-LMB_9814.jpgAt Lander University, we understand that your education is an important investment. Data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor and Statistics shows that employees with a four-year degree earn over 65% more per week than those with just a high school diploma, and 42% more than those with an associate’s degree.

Often, young people are pressured to make important decisions about colleges and careers. If you’ve recently finished high school or a two-year degree at a community or technical college, you may feel as if the world expects you to have the next forty years of your life already planned. You might feel stressed to pick a college and a degree program to get you exactly where you want to go.

But what if you don’t yet know what you want to do after college? Is there a way to invest in your education, develop the critical skillset that your future employers are looking for, and figure out what the next chapter of your life will look like?

If this conversation sounds familiar, Lander’s BA in Humanities program might be the right fit for you!

Those who’ve earned a humanities degree have gone on to work in a broad range of exciting fields. Some have been authors, event planners and artistic directors. While a college education is a game-changer in long-term career success, it shouldn’t burden you with loads of student debt. That’s why Lander University is proud to offer a world-class education at a price students and their families can afford. We’ve kept our tuition frozen for eight consecutive years, and most students qualify for state and federal scholarships and grants that make the total cost of their Lander education even lower.

Lander’s BA in Humanities couples that affordable price-tag with a flexible pathway to a baccalaureate education. Each student will take two courses: HUMA 250 (Foundations in Humanities) and HUMA 499 (Senior Seminar). The rest of your coursework will come from general education, elective credits (where you will be encouraged to pursue a minor), and 30 credit hours, of the 300- or 400-level, in any of the following humanities disciplines: Art, English, Foreign Languages, History, Media and Communication, Music, Philosophy, Political Science, Religion and Sociology.

This is a degree program that allows you to focus on the subjects that truly interest you. One semester, you may decide to pair History of South Carolina with Southern Language and Linguistics. The next, you might decide to pair a sociology class, like Cultures of Violence, with a class like Warfare through the Ages. The different combinations of classes you can take are endless! Instead of being limited to a specific program of study, you’ll have a wide selection of courses that are challenging and rewarding.

Contrary to the message that the world may be sending you, it’s okay to be unsure of what you want to do after college. In the meantime, don’t let that stop you from making an important investment in your education (and your future earning potential). In Lander’s BA in Humanities program, you’ll learn to think critically about the world we live in, develop the analytical and communication skills that you’ll need in any career, and participate in learning experiences that will make you a competitive candidate on the job market no matter where you want to go.
