Lander University's Department of Mass Communication and Theatre will begin their production season with "The Trojan Women," by Euripides. Performances are Wednesday-Saturday, Oct. 5-8, at 8 p.m., with matinee performances Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 8-9, at 3 p.m. All performances will take place in Lander's Green Room Studio, Abney Cultural Center, Room 220.
Set during the Trojan War, the play is directed by Lander professor of theatre Monique Sacay-Bagwell.
Bagwell explains in her director's note for the production that the play was an anti-war statement. "While there are truly no victors in war, for both sides suffer long-lasting losses, there are bright moments where we see the determination and true character of the human spirit clinging onto the smallest possibilities of hope despite all the odds. For all the innocent who have fallen, or whose lives were touched by the merciless hands of war, this play is for you," she writes.
Cast members are: Eric Johnson, of Mauldin, as Poseidon; Amber Rae Weston, of Anderson, as Athene; Patricia deVroomen, of Greenwood, as Hecuba; Graham Shaffer, of Greenwood, as Talthybius; Aurora Adams, of Laurens, as Cassandra; Jennifer Ivey, of Rock Hill, as Andromache; Turner Bishop, of Ware Shoals, as Astyanax; Michael Shea, of Columbia, as Menelaus; and Kelsey Risher, of Birmingham, Ala., as Helen.
Lander assistant professor of theatre Jennifer Sansfacon is the production technical director and production designer.
Admission is free. Due to limited seating in the Green Room Studio, tickets are required for "The Trojan Women." Tickets can be picked up at the university box office, in Lander's Johnston Commons. Box office hours are 5:30-7:40 p.m. on the day of evening performances, and 1-2:40 p.m. on the day of matinee performances. Tickets cannot be reserved in advance.
