Lander University's Equestrian Center will host an Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) event on Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 19 and 20, at the Equestrian Center on Hwy. 72/221. Shows will begin at 9 a.m. both days; they are free and open to the public.
Teams will represent 14 colleges and universities in South Carolina, Georgia and Alabama that are in IHSA's Zone 5, Region 2. The schools are: Berry College, Clemson University, Converse College, Emory University, Furman University, Georgia State University, Georgia Tech University, Judson College, Kennesaw State University, North Georgia College and State University, University of Alabama, University of Georgia, University of South Carolina and Lander.
The Lander team most recently competed on Oct. 22-23 at Berry College in Georgia in hunt seat and western categories. Six riders scored first-place finishes in hunt seat and two in western. On Saturday, Grace McShane, of John's Island was high point hunt seat rider for the show. She also finished first in intermediate equitation on the flat and second in intermediate over fences.
Anastacia George, of Auburn, Ala., won first place for novice equitation on the flat, which qualified her for novice equitation on the flat at the Zone 5, Region 2 finals.
Whitney Malcolm, of Columbia, finished first in advanced walk/trot/canter on the flat and that qualified her to compete in the same category at the Zone 5, Region 2 finals. Other first-place finishers in Saturday's hunt seat show were Lori Ballentine of Greenwood, beginner walk/trot/canter on the flat; and Kathryn Walker, walk/trot on the flat. As a team, Lander's riders finished third overall in the first day events.
In Sunday's western competition, Madison Kirk, of Laurens, finished first in intermediate I horsemanship, and Jamie Morris of Anderson was first in beginner western horsemanship, which qualified her in that same category in the Zone 5, Region 2 finals.
Ellison, Poston of Hodges, was reserve high point hunt seat rider and first-place finisher in novices over fences in the Sunday show, and the team finished fifth overall.
