Lander University political science majors Conner Lewis and Christopher Ty Grogan, both from Greenwood, will be working in the offices of two members of South Carolina's congressional delegation this fall.
They were selected for Washington Semester Internships sponsored by the University of South Carolina Honors College in Columbia.
Lewis will work in the office of Third District U.S. Rep. Jeff Duncan (R-Laurens).
Grogan was selected for an internship in the office of Republican U.S. Sen. Jim DeMint of Greenville.
The internships are paid positions and, in addition to earning course credits at Lander, Lewis and Grogan will experience firsthand the workings of the federal government and the cultural opportunities associated with living in the nation's capital. They will work full time at their congressional duties and attend evening classes.
Lewis and Grogan are scheduled to begin working in Washington on Sept. 8. Lewis, who will be a junior this fall, plans to attend law school after graduating from Lander and said the internship will give him good insights. A graduate of Abbeville High School, he is the son of Sherri and Michael Lewis of Greenwood. His sister, Courtney, graduated from Lander in 2006.
Grogan, who graduated from Ninety Six High School, will also be a junior at Lander this fall. He said he has a passion for politics and the internship will give him the opportunity to live and work in the nation's capital. After Lander, Grogan plans to obtain a doctoral degree and teach political science at the college level.
Grogan is the son of Debbie and Mickey Grogan of Greenwood. He has an older sister, Brook, and an older brother, Trey.
Grogan and Lewis are the third and fourth Lander students chosen for Washington Semester internships. Jeremy Babb of North Augusta was the first, followed by Andrew Willis of Williston, both in 2010.
