On April 26, Lander hosted a reception for the annual senior arts exhibition. Mediums included in the 43-piece exhibition, entitled "Final Breadth," were sculpture, ceramics, drawing, woodcarving, pen and ink, painting on canvas and paper, photography and graphic design.

The reception is open to the public from 5-7 p.m. at the Monsanto Art Gallery, and the 43-piece exhibition, entitled "Final Breadth" will run through May 2 and serve as a grand send-off for all nine graduating arts students.

"It's our last arts show of the year and is a signature event for our seniors," said Jon Holloway, director of the Monsanto Gallery. "It represents their four years of being art students and showcases their individual artwork."

Pieces include sculpture, ceramics, drawing, woodcarving, pen and ink, painting on both canvas and paper, photography and graphic design.

Seniors Kaitlin Sherfield and Ricardo Macias were both winners at February's juried exhibit - but Chelsea Miller and Chase Arnold said that even though the senior exhibit doesn't have a judge and prizes, it is just as exceptional.

"It shows off what we have accomplished, as seniors, throughout our college careers," said Miller, a Visual Arts Major, whose pieces include an oil on canvas painting entitled "Figuring It out".

Arnold, who created a large ceramic rabbit called "Lucky Foot" for the exhibition, added, "I love seeing my work alongside my classmates at this one last event."

Making it into the show, however, requires each senior to present a body of work with an artist statement to a jury panel.

Sample pieces include:

  • "The Bible" - ceramics, by Turner Horton;
  • "Curved Road" - photography, by Hayley Anderson;
  • "Zelda Villains" - graphics, by Dillon Watts;
  • "Typewriter" - mixed media on steel, by Sabrina Sullivan;
  • "Visions of My Imperfections" - ceramic head likeness, by Jamea Bryson Phillips; and
  • "Simios" - ceramics, first place in 2018 juried exhibit, by Ricardo Macias.

"Most of our seniors have participated before in juried shows, but the senior show is just to celebrate them as artists - it's our way of saying 'good job,'" Holloway said.

Considering that they are all seniors, Kaitlin Sherfield perhaps fielded the most fitting display with a drawing of a chair turned on its side called "On The Way Out."

After graduating in May, Sherfield plans to become a graphic designer. But for now, she is just going to enjoy her last arts show as a Lander student.

"I'm really honored to be in a show with my fellow artists," said Sherfield. "And I could not be more proud of the work we have all done to make this show the best that it can be.
