Like many across the state, we were shocked and saddened to learn of the passing of Fred Sheheen on Monday, June 6.
Fred was among the best of the best in terms of humanity, the arts and bringing people together.
Fred led the S.C. Commission on Higher Education from 1987 - 1997, a tenure marked by his remarkable efforts to make college education a reality for all South Carolinians. Fred was also a strong advocate for the arts and a tremendous civic servant who remained active in state and local affairs throughout his life.
In May 1992, he was presented with an Honorary Doctorate from Lander.
