Counseling Services assists students in overcoming personal, emotional, and psychological issues in order to support them in achieving their academic, personal, and professional goals.

Each Lander student's University experience is, ideally, a time of personal as well as intellectual growth. Sometimes personal problems can develop which make it difficult for a student to achieve success. Counseling Services helps students in dealing with these problems once they occur.

Personal Counseling is available at no charge. These counseling sessions are confidential and tailored to accommodate each student's needs.

If more long term or specialized services are needed, counselors can make referrals to off-campus resources. Personal counseling is accessible by appointment or on a walk-in basis for students willing to wait for counselor availability.

The Office of Counseling Services offers:

  • Personal and individualized counseling sessions
  • Group counseling sessions
  • Substance Use awareness programs
  • Student development educational programs
  • Student development issues and concerns

Some common concerns are:

  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Family problems
  • Homesickness
  • Stress
  • Relationship problems
  • Time management
  • Low academic performance
  • Alcohol or drug abuse

The transition to college can be an incredibly challenging adjustment. You need to learn new routines to deal with new people in a new place all while trying to meet the expectations you’ve set for yourself and maybe even those you feel others have for you. Trying to find balance in the middle of that process can be hard and overwhelming but you don’t have to do it all alone. Since 2010 I have been working with students at Lander to make those adjustments as they try to overcome the challenges that come with a new stage of life. I have helped students work through anxiety, depression, adjustment, grief and loss, anger, relationship difficulties, and decisions about majors and careers.

Hardships are guaranteed in life and especially in college. Let’s talk about it.

Sometimes we feel like we have to deal with these challenges on our own even though we don’t know how or even where to start. Sometimes it’s nice to have someone in your corner. That’s where I come in.

My goal is to provide a space for you to safely and openly share your story so that we can make sense of it together. I’ve worked with many different students with a variety of different issues including anxiety, depression, family dysfunction and trauma among countless other unique situations. I like to collaborate with my clients to create relevant and achievable goals. Together we can work towards YOUR goals for yourself.

If you’re having a hard time, I am here to support you. My approach to counseling prioritizes the development of a trusting, candid, and collaborative relationship. I draw on a number of different styles of therapy but am particularly influenced by acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT); its emphasis is on developing flexible ways of thinking, mindfully experiencing, and adopting different perspectives and using this set of skills to engage with your most important values.

I enjoy working with clients on a broad range of issues, but I find it especially satisfying to be of help to people who are healing from trauma. I am trained in cognitive processing therapy (CPT) and eye movement desensitization reprocessing (EMDR); extensive research has shown these interventions to be effective for many people with PTSD and other issues. These approaches can alter the way you understand and experience distressing memories, helping them become more a part of your past and less an intrusion into your present.

I’d consider it a privilege to get to know your unique history, strengths, needs, and goals and to accompany you on the journey toward better functioning and a more fulfilling life.

(*Available for virtual sessions only)

I have a spot in my heart for the unique experiences college students go through after completing my internship here at Lander University from 2021-2022, as well as at the Winthrop Community Clinic. I have experience of counseling individuals experiencing suicidal ideation, anxiety, depression, personality disorders, trauma, ADHD, gender identity, spiritual and familial issues. I have worked with individuals with various gender identities, race and ethnicities, and mental health problems. I am an LGBTQIA ally and believe in creating an affirming and safe environment for all clients regardless of their presenting problem(s). I integrate mindfulness, psychoeducation, and self-soothing strategies into my sessions with the belief that this will help with clients' healing.

I'm currently offering telehealth sessions for Lander students and am available from 8am-6:30pm Monday-Friday. I also provide intake assessments for all students interested in getting their healing process started.
