Lander senior and ROTC cadet August Darden put his leadership skills to the test this summer, completing some of the Army’s most demanding training. Darden earned his Air Assault Badge at West Point before heading straight to a 31-day Cadet Summer Training program at Fort Knox. Now back at Lander, he’s been selected to lead more than 70 cadets across three campuses as Battalion Commander of the Highlander Battalion.

Lander is also updating several academic programs as part of a statewide review by the South Carolina Commission on Higher Education. Six degree programs with historically low enrollment are being phased out, while several other areas are being realigned to create clearer career pathways. Current students in affected programs can complete their degrees as planned, and no faculty positions are being eliminated.

Coming up September 24, former South Carolina legislator and current Camden mayor Vincent Sheheen will visit Lander for a closer look at how — and why — state government works the way it does. The evening will include an author talk and signing of his book, The Concise Guide to South Carolina State Government, beginning at 5:30 p.m. in the Abney Cultural Center Auditorium.

And finally, more students will soon have opportunities to get hands-on with summer research at Lander. A new National Science Foundation grant will provide more than $157,000 a year for four years, supporting 10 student researchers each summer across as many as five faculty labs.
