The relaxed lifestyles of the 21st century hardly define the world of socialite and author Emily Post, who became famous for writing about etiquette.

But Post, who said, “Etiquette is the science of living,” no doubt would give a nod of approval for the efforts underway at Lander University to help its College of Business students learn how to polish and execute proper business etiquette through its series of professional development courses.

A highlight of BA 499, the professional development course for seniors, is the business etiquette luncheon. “During the final course in the professional development series, BA 499, students are finalizing their career goals, preparing for job applications and interviews, and learning business etiquette,” said MaryKate Leggieri, director of online programs and professional development in the College of Business.

“Business etiquette includes proper attire, small talk and conversation, and dining etiquette,” she said, explaining a lesson is devoted exclusively to dining etiquette, which includes table settings, manners and appropriate topics of conversation, along with dining rules and best practices.

The etiquette luncheon, an experiential part of the business series, is attended by faculty, staff and corporate partners of the University and community members. “This allows our students to put into practice what they have learned throughout the course,” Leggieri said.

When students gathered for the luncheon, they found gleaming fine china placed on linen tablecloths topped with shining glasses and flatware. Diamond White, a senior business student from Greenwood, said the course has provided her with important information on how to interact in business settings.

“Some of this was new information, but it has given me the confidence to feel more comfortable when I begin my career,” she said.

White, who plans to pursue her master’s degree in business at Lander after graduating in May, said, “I like how this class gave me an inside look at the business world.”

Giving Lander students the confidence they need in all aspects of their careers is an integral part of their education, Leggieri said.

“This is so important for the College of Business to offer this opportunity for our students because it allows them to network, feel comfortable and confident in their etiquette skills, and provides them an opportunity to see that they can be successful as an emerging business professional in a networking situation,” she said.
