Lander University kicked off the first of its several freshman orientation sessions on Wednesday. The sessions will each span two days, for a total of six sessions.

After offering a combination of virtual and in-person orientations last year, Lander is offering full, in-person orientations for incoming freshman. "We are excited to be back to in-person orientation sessions for this summer," said Boyd Yarbrough, vice president for Student Affairs.

Incoming freshman are split into groups which are led by current Lander upperclass students who are known as orientation leaders. The leaders serve an integral role in the transition to college for incoming freshman, acting as role models, resources for freshmen and campus guides. "Our orientation leaders are dynamic students who represent the best of Lander," said Yarbrough, adding that "their enthusiasm and love for Lander is contagious."

Orientation sessions include events like group connections where incoming students can meet others, lunches in the Grier Dining Hall, class registrations and information on how to thrive in Bearcat Country. Events during sessions are designed to break the ice between students to encourage community, as well as other activities meant to begin forming their foundation for life at Lander.

"I am proud of our professional and student leadership for their tireless work to welcome the newest students and families to Lander," said Yarbrough.
