Lander Senior Floyd Has ‘The Heart of a Public Servant’

Jitwan FloydLander University senior Jitwan Floyd, a political science major with a public administration emphasis, knows what it means to stay busy.

Floyd, who will start work on a masters in public administration in the fall, takes an active role in Lander's Political Science Association, and also serves as a presidential ambassador, leading campus tours, open houses and other events, and sharing his experience with visitors to Lander.

He is also active in the community, as evidenced by his work with the Youth Crusade Evangelistic Center in Bradley. He is a member of the Greenwood County Democratic Party and chair of the Young Democrats of Greenwood.

"Both roles have provided opportunities to work on the campaign trail with former Sen. Floyd Nicholson and Denise Waldrep, former candidate for South Carolina House District 13. Currently, I am working with both organizations in Greenwood County in an attempt to increase voter awareness and to encourage civic engagement," he said.

One of his long-term goals is to run for public office.

"I would like to use my degree to depolarize, protect and strengthen our democracy," he said.

A dean's list student, Floyd also gave high marks to Lander's Department of Government, Criminology and Sociology. He singled out Professor of Political Science Dr. Ashley Woodiwiss, Professor of Political Science Dr. Lucas McMillan, Associate Professor of Political Science Dr. Kimberly Richburg, Assistant Professor of Political Science Dr. Matthew Malone, and Jane Merrill, adjunct professor of political science and legal studies, as having been especially helpful.

Woodiwiss called Floyd "a joy to teach. He is serious, mature, focused, and professional. We expect Jitwan to continue to have the heart of a public servant and to bring credit to Lander wherever his professional journey takes him."
