Meet Lander University’s Michelle Scott, Human Services Program Coordinator

Michelle ScottHuman Services professionals are in demand now more than ever, and Lander University's recently launched Human Services program is designed to provide students with the knowledge to skillfully help others in need. Like many other programs at Lander, the Human Services program is accessible online, on campus, or at the University Center of Greenville. The program is a great fit for an individual looking to pursue a graduate degree in counseling services or social work, or for a rewarding career in the Human Services field.

Human Services Program Coordinator and Lecturer Michelle Scott recently joined Lander's faculty to head up the Human Services program, bringing with her a wealth of academic and professional experience. Prior to Lander, Scott worked for the University of South Carolina's Master of Social Work program, while also maintaining a small private counseling practice. She also has experience working in a variety of human service settings and other universities. Scott graduated from UNC Greensboro with an undergraduate degree in psychology, and UNC Chapel Hill with her master's in clinical social work. She is currently a Licensed Independent Social Worker - Clinical Practitioner and an approved clinical supervisor in S.C.

Her students' success has always proven her to be an excellent mentor to them. Scott loves "seeing her students grow," and she strives to maintain a relationship with them after graduation. She refers to this process as "passing the torch." Past students of hers are now leading organizations, operating their own private practices, pursuing graduate degrees of their own, and using their undergraduate education to work in the Human Services field.

Scott finds the program's strong curriculum to be a valuable asset, which offers human services coursework along with both applied psychology and sociology. She and faculty members are continuously seeking out the best and most current course materials for their students. Scott says that the program "offers a solid knowledge base." The program is also designed for a seamless transition for students who already have a foundation in Human Services from one of South Carolina's technical schools, which is helpful for students looking to further their education. "Lander is going in an excellent direction with this program," Scott said, "and I'm thankful to be a part of it."

First launched in August of this year, Lander's Human Services program is actively seeking students, and Lander's rolling admissions process provides applicants with fast feedback. For more information on Lander's Human Services program, visit www.lander.edu/human-services.
