Lander Unveils New Fine Arts Master’s Degree

Lander University's College of Arts and Humanities is introducing a transformative Master of Fine Art (MFA) in Visual Art degree program this fall. Courses begin in August and will be taught at Lander's main campus in Greenwood.

Building upon Lander's highly successful Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA), its MFA in Visual Art gives students the ability to explore the relationship between multiple disciplines, like two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) art.

The program is ideal for those who already possess a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Fine Arts degree and have a strong interest in the studio practice of "creating."

The curriculum is designed to prepare graduates for a broad range of professions that value creativity and innovation. From studio artist, fine craftsperson, public art sculptor or professional photographer, to gallery entrepreneur, museum curator, art instructor or designer, the far-reaching field of careers for graduates with an MFA in Visual Art is extensive.

Students will work one-on-one with art professors who will provide individual mentorship and instruction that's based on the student's area of interest. This approach is essential to helping students hone their skills with more than one media and to foster a mixed media approach in their art.

"Most art degree programs are set up so that a student gets a degree in a specific medium, such as painting, printing, ceramics, etc. Our approach is about 2D and 3D art as a mindset or direction," said Sandy Singletary, associate professor of art and chair of Lander's Department of Art.

Lander's MFA in Visual Art is a rigorous program with an emphasis on increased studio-based work for the student. "Every three hours of class requires three hours of studio time outside of class," explained Singletary.

The program has been approved by the South Carolina Commission on Higher Education, and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC).
