Lander Introduces New Bachelor’s Degree in International Studies

Lander University is adding a Bachelor of Arts degree in International Studies to its array of degree programs this fall. With classes scheduled to begin in August, the program features a hybrid approach of online and face-to-face instruction at Lander's main Greenwood campus.

Curriculum for the program is designed to strengthen students' understandings of globalization, culture, conflict and cooperation. While cores courses include international studies, world history and political science, there are upper-level courses as well. Topics for those include examining international business practices, world health, bioethics, foreign policy and international law.

In addition to their course work, students earning the degree in International Studies will be required to either:

  • Study abroad for a semester
  • Participate in an international studies internship
  • Travel with a Lander instructor on a short-term study abroad tour
  • Exhibit a 200-course level proficiency in a foreign language.

The program is ideal for:

  • Current Lander students pursuing a minor in International Studies, looking for semester study abroad opportunities or have completed coursework in disciplines related to the degree
  • Upstate residents of South Carolina working in careers involving international studies who want to earn a bachelor's degree
  • Persons with an associate of arts or associate of science degree from one of the state's technical or community colleges.

"Within South Carolina and beyond, career options in international studies continues to rise, mainly because of global investment and trade," said Dr. Lucas McMillan, dean of Lander's College of Behavioral & Social Sciences. "Because of the impact of globalization, a degree in international students positions a person well for success and advancement in many fields, including within government, private and non-profit sectors."

The program has been approved by the South Carolina Commission on Higher Education, and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC).
