Lander Launches New Degree Program for Health Awareness

In anticipation of a projected spike in home health awareness needs and because the health of a community is just as important as an individual's health, Lander University is introducing its Bachelor of Science in Health Promotion and Wellness degree.

This high-demand and market-driven degree is specifically designed to prepare a workforce to help individuals, families and communities maintain personal health. Knowledge gained during the program is ideal for students seeking careers in health education, health coaching, and worksite wellness programs in corporate and private environments.

Going far beyond individual fitness, the program will include the importance of promoting a healthy lifestyle to protect the community as a whole.

Courses for the program will begin in August with the start of the Fall 2020 academic year and will be led on Lander's main campus in Greenwood.

Classes will include a focus on statistics, anatomy, physiology, health education, program planning, implementation and evaluation. There will also be coursework in social determinants of health, community health, epidemiology, health promotion and disease prevention."

Graduates of the program will be qualified to sit for the Certified Health Education Specialist Exam, and will be able to continue towards their graduate degree in public health.

"Our Bachelor of Science in Health Promotion and Wellness degree will provide a solid foundation to prepare our graduates to work as health educators," said Holisa Wharton, dean of the William Preston Turner School of Nursing at Lander. "With a forecasted job growth increase rate of 16 percent, this new Lander degree offering is definitely meeting a need.

The program has been approved by the South Carolina Commission on Higher Education, and is pending approval by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC).
