Information Regarding Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19)

Lander University continues to closely monitor the current novel coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak occurring internationally. University officials are working with government and public health agencies to follow the guidelines established for colleges and universities by the Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) and Centers for Disease Control (CDC).

At this time, there are NO confirmed or suspected cases of COVID-19 among members of the Lander University community, nor are there any reported cases in South Carolina. This message is for informational purposes only; we do not believe that there is any immediate health risk to our campus.

COVID-19 is a respiratory illness that can spread from person to person. Symptoms include fever, cough and shortness of breath. The virus is believed to spread via respiratory droplets, touching infected surfaces/objects, and through close personal contact with infected individuals.

As the University community prepares for spring break, we realize that many students and faculty may be planning to travel in the coming days, whether locally or abroad. While the United States has not been significantly impacted by COVID-19, new cases are being reported in some regions and internationally. Additionally, flu activity is high in the U.S. and is expected to continue for several weeks.

Because the safety and wellbeing of our campus community is our highest priority, we are encouraging all students, faculty and staff - whether on campus or off - to follow these everyday guidelines for preventing the spread of infectious illnesses:

  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom; before eating; and after blowing your nose, coughing or sneezing.
  • Use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer if soap and water are not available.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth.
  • Avoid contact with people who are sick and stay home when you are sick.
  • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then promptly throw the tissue in the trash.
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces using a regular household cleaning spray.

SPECIAL TRAVEL RECOMMENDATIONS

If you are traveling during spring break, be aware that this situation is rapidly evolving, and travel alerts are being issued for some countries/areas in Europe and Asia that could impact your plans. Travelers - especially those visiting large cities or going abroad - should take precautions to avoid possible exposure. Monitor developments in the area via a trusted news source, and refer to the U.S. Department of State's travel advisories for the latest travel information.

If you have traveled outside of the country, or if you experience any symptoms of illness upon your return, you should immediately contact Lander University's Student Health Services. Nurses are available in Student Health Services Monday-Friday, from 8 a.m. - 5 p.m., to answer questions, or provide assessment and referral to the local hospital system.

Student Health Services is located on campus in the Genesis building, next to LUPD, and can be reached by phone at 864-388-8885 or by email at studentwellness@lander.edu. For health/counseling assistance after hours, please contact LUPD at 864-388-8222 (non-emergency) or 864-388-8911 (emergency).
