Over 100 students from Greenwood-area high schools attended the 2018 South Carolina Student Leadership Conference at Lander University on Thursday.
Brooks Harper, author of "Why Should We Hire You?" and "7 Skills to Make Mill$" gave the keynote presentation emphasizing the importance of building a plan for the future.
"Each and everyone of you has value that you can offer, not only to a company, but to your school, your family, your neighborhood, city, state and beyond," Harper said.
Workshops focused on a variety of topics including internships, establishing and managing credit, and developing communication skills.
"The South Carolina Student Leadership Conference is an asset to our county, helping us create a talented and competitive workforce for our community," said Theo Lane, Greenwood county councilman and director of government and community relations for Duke Energy. "I believe that Brooks Harper's message, along with the instruction from our talented workshop leaders, will equip Greenwood's students with new skills, and set them apart from their future competition."
Presented by the Greenwood Chamber of Commerce, the conference is a partnership with Lander University, Duke Energy, Leadership Greenwood and the South Carolina Department of Commerce.Sophomores, juniors and seniors who have demonstrated strong leadership skills in their schools and communities are nominated by their teachers and administration leaders. The conference aims to provide the selected students with advanced leadership training, and the opportunity to interact with students from other high schools as well as business leaders from the Greenwood area.
