Students Experience ‘The Magic of Chemistry’

Chemistry Lab Manager Jack Burton shows Clara Brown, left, a rising sixth-grader at Westview Middle School; Spencer Smith, a rising sixth-grader at Brewer Middle School; and Gicel Verdeflor, a rising seventh-grader at Brewer, how to determine the concentration of acetic acid in vinegar by adding a solution of sodium hydroxide.

Students in "The Magic of Chemistry," a Duke Energy-sponsored program offered this summer by Lander University, learned the chemical reactions that enabled them to make a wide variety of products, such as bottle rockets, soap, super balls, nylon rope, guncotton, slime and glue.

The chemistry of products commonly found in grocery stores, pharmacies and at home was another topic.
