Lander University Launches the Lander Line Shuttle Service for Students

A new student shuttle service is making it easier for Lander University students to travel safely from campus to Uptown Greenwood and other nearby areas.

The Lander Line shuttle service began operation on Monday, Dec. 4, and provides free transportation for Lander students, faculty and staff seven days a week. While Lander Line begins with a 35-passenger shuttle bus, plans call for an eventual acquirement of a San Francisco-style trolley.

The Lander Line service is intended for Lander students, faculty and staff only, and passengers must show their official university identification to travel on the shuttle. While guests of the campus family are permitted to travel on the Lander Line, they and their Lander host must first sign-in with the Lander University Police Department (LUPD).

Initial plans of the Lander Line were announced to the university family during the Sept. 18 State of the University address by Lander President Richard Cosentino. "Many of our students - particularly our international students - do not own vehicles, so the Lander Line is vital in providing them with safe transportation throughout the city of Greenwood. It's also a fantastic way to make it easier for our students to become even more active in the community, further immersing them into the Greenwood culture."

Greenwood Mayor Welborn Adams welcomed news of the Lander Line. "I am very excited for Lander University students to have improved access to Uptown Greenwood shopping and restaurants," he said.

Routes and times for the Lander Line
The Lander Line will begin service at 5:30 p.m. each day and will initially follow two routes. According to Capt. Vernon Peppers of the LUPD, routes and times can be adjusted and added to depending upon demand.

Both routes will be alternated until 8:30 p.m. with the final arrival on campus scheduled for approximately 9:30 p.m.

"Our goal is to eventually provide daily service from 4:30 p.m.-11:30 p.m.," said Peppers.
