South Carolina has assets that are "directly in favor of great economic growth and development," according to South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster.

"The way to stop that expansion is to put brakes on it, have taxes that are too high, or have too many regulations," he said.

McMaster was in town as part of his "listening tour," seeking input from the public on ways that the state can be made a more hospitable place to do business.

"There's not another state that can compete with our state. There's not another group of people that can compete with our people. What we have to do is get the obstacles out of the way," he said.

The event, hosted by Greenwood Chamber of Commerce and sponsored by Self Regional Healthcare, was held Tuesday, Aug. 15, on the Lander University campus during Student Move-in.

Lander President Richard Cosentino, who also spoke, said that the freshman class at Lander is nearly 40 percent larger than last year and "one of the most qualified classes" that Lander has ever had.

Cosentino also called attention to Lander's recent ranking by Schools.com as one of the Top 5 four-year colleges in South Carolina.

"Lots of good things are happening here at Lander University," he said.
