Student members of Lander University's Psychology Club recently held a fundraising event to benefit Beyond Abuse in Greenwood, which is dedicated to eliminating sexual violence and child abuse through awareness, advocacy and action. The organization provides services in Greenwood, Abbeville and Laurens counties.

Kendra Tomalko, president of the club, said vice president Ari West is an intern who volunteers at the agency, and she suggested the fundraiser. Club members worked with the Zaxby's restaurant in Greenwood, which donated a portion of one night's income to Beyond Abuse. Tomalko said the event raised $240 to assist Beyond Abuse with non-grant funded expenses.

Beyond Abuse operates one of 15 sexual assault programs and one of 13 accredited children's advocacy programs in South Carolina. It specializes in providing crisis response, advocacy and counseling, and facilitating awareness and educational programs.

Lander psychology majors frequently satisfy internship requirements by working at the Beyond Abuse and volunteering as victim advocates. Executive director Cathy Miller said, "Lander students are a great asset to the community and our agency."
