Virginia Christine Watson, of Greenville, was among the 148 students who graduated from Lander University in December 2015. She also had a 4.0 grade point average, which qualified her to receive the Thayer Award, the university's highest academic recognition.
Watson earned a degree in exercise science and she plans to pursue a career in medicine as a cardiologist. She said she was very excited to receive the award, and added it would not have been possible without the help and encouragement of her professors.
One of them, Dr. Leland Neilsen, assistant professor and director of Lander's exercise science program, described Watson as an exemplary student, professional, respectful and hardworking. "She has a strong work ethic, academic ability and interpersonal skills."
University President Richard Cosentino presented the award to Watson. He said, "We are very proud of you," and he expressed gratitude to Lander's faculty for their skills in developing students like Watson.
The award she received is given by the family of Dr. Henry K. Thayer. It is presented each semester to the Lander student who earns at least 60 credit hours and graduates with the highest grade point average.
