Lander Receives Federal Grant for SSS Program

Lander University and 20 other South Carolina institutions of higher education will share in a more than $5-million federal grant to fund their Student Support Services (SSS) programs.

The programs are designed to identify and provide services for students identified as disadvantaged, giving them intensive academic support, tutoring, counseling and career and cultural enrichment.

Leslie Glover, director of SSS at Lander, said the university will receive over $224,000 a year for five years. She said the program, which Lander introduced in 2005, is funded entirely by the federal government to assist 160 students each academic year.

Glover described herself as excited about the grant. "It's important because it helps us enhance the quality of learning for the target student population we serve."
