Fundraiser Aug. 7 for Glenas Green Scholarship in College of Education

Glenas GreenLander University and the family and friends of Glenas D. Green will conduct a community action day on Friday, Aug. 7, to raise funds for an endowed scholarship in her name in Lander's College of Education and to foster awareness about health and wellness and pancreatic cancer.

Green, who graduated from Lander in 1979 with a bachelor's degree in early childhood education, died in 2010. Her family created the scholarship to honor her 30 years as an educator and her compassionate, dedicated service to others. She taught at four elementary schools in Greenwood County School District 50 and served as a guidance counselor, assistant principal and coordinator of Girl Power, a mentoring program for teenage girls at Brewer Middle School.

Each year on Aug. 7, which was her birthday, the Green family conducts a community action day to honor her memory. This year's event will be a 5K walk and run at Lander's Jeff May Complex on Montague Avenue, in Greenwood, from 5 to 8 p.m. There will also be a health screening, entertainment and refreshments. A portion of the proceeds will also be donated to the Girl Power program.

The entry fee is $20 for adults, $15 for participants 18 and younger and $5 for the Kiddie Run for children 5 and under.

Registration can be made by credit card online at www.lander.edu. Select "Giving" at the top left of the page and click on Glenas Green Community Action Day 5K Walk/Run.

More information about the event or on making outright contributions to the Green scholarship, is available by calling Lander's University Advancement Office at 864-388-8350.
