Lander University Hosts 2014 M.A.T. Graduate Art Exhibit

Lander University will host the 2014 M.A.T. Graduate Art Exhibition in the Jackson Library from June 26 - July 3, with a closing reception on July 2 from 5-7 p.m.

The Master of Arts in Teaching program at Lander is a rigorous, 14-month program that prepares artists for a career in teaching. Dr. Susan Deaton, director of Lander's M.A.T. program, said, "We collaborate with our colleagues, parents and students to make art relevant to the life of our school and community."

The 2014 M.A.T. Graduate Exhibit will feature artwork from five artists and will include mixed media, photography, drawing and 3-D artwork. The exhibit showcases the unique perspective of future educators as they prepare to enter dual roles as artist and teacher.

Candy Cannon, a 2014 M.A.T. graduate, said, "Since I entered the M.A.T. program, I have pushed myself to try new techniques and materials. When I work with mixed media, I like to pretend my art is like a patchwork quilt. The viewer will see a cohesive unified piece of artwork, but also the materials that I used in the process."

Along with Cannon, the 2014 M.A.T. graduates are: Ashley Battle, Samantha Brown, Amanda Wald and Johneethia Williams.

The exhibit will run through July 3 and is open to the public. Refreshments will be served during the closing reception on July 2. Jackson Library's summer hours are: Monday: 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Tuesday and Wednesday: 7:30 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., Thursday: 7:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Lander University is closed Friday - Sunday.
