Soprano Chelsea Bonagura to Perform at Lander University

Chelsea BonaguraThis year's Ann Mason Hutto Memorial Voice Recital and Master Class will feature visiting soprano Chelsea Bonagura.

The Tuesday, Oct. 9, event begins at 8 p.m. in Lander's University's Barksdale Recital Hall, Room 250 of the Josephine B. Abney Cultural Center.

A native of Rochester, N.Y., Bonagura received her B.M. in Voice Performance from the Eastman School of Music and her M.M. in Voice Performance from UNC-Greensboro. She received additional music and language training at the International Vocal Arts Institute in Tel Aviv, Israel; L'Universite Paris Sorbonne-Paris IV; and from several other music festivals and language institutes throughout Europe.

Bonagura has been a soprano soloist in numerous concert works, including Saint-Saens' "Christmas Oratorio;" Pergolesi's "Magnificat in C Major;" Bach's "Christmas Oratorio BWV 248;" and Barber's "Prayers of Kierkegaard," which was performed at the Stevens Center in Winston-Salem, N.C.

Lander lecturer of music and staff pianist Amy Blackwood will accompany Bonagura as she performs "Tornami a Vegheggiar," from George Frederic Handel's "Alcina;" Sergei Rachmaninov's "Zdes' khorosho, Op. 21, no.7," "Ne poj, krasavica, prim ne, Op. 4, no. 4" and "Vocalise, Op. 34, no. 14;" and Henri Duparc's "Phidyle," "Chanson Triste" and "L'invitation au Voyage."

The master class portion of the evening will feature four of Lander's music majors, sopranos Markela Dandy, of Graniteville; Jessica Hart, of Starr; Corrie Woods, of Leavenworth, Kan.; and Haley Shelton, of Greenwood.

Blackwood will accompany Shelton and Hart as they sing "Sandman's Aria" and "Abendsegen" from German composer Engelbert Humperdinck's "Hansel und Gretel;" Dandy as she sings Felix Mendelssohn's "Neue Liebe, Op. 19, no. 4;" and Woods as she sings Richard Strauss's "Wie sollten wir geheim sie halten, Op. 19, no. 4."

The performances are free and open to the public, but seating is limited.
